It is not a very good one, but in our hurry of departure I couldn’t get a better one. We are at last in Sarvar now, and very sad to have left our dear Bavaria. I came in the car with Mami and Ludwig and we spent one night at the Grundlsee in the Salzkammergut at some friends. It is quite near the Wolfgangsee of the “Weissen Rossel”. It was beautiful there. I never saw such lovely mountains and valleys. The others had gone in one day from Leutstetten till here. Our house is full of guests now, quite unusual here. There are two friends of Ludwig, the two younger cousins of Leutstetten with their miss and a maid and for this evening we are awaiting Mary D’Arcy our Irish friend who will stay here till the end of November. We haven’t got time to arrange anything now and the house is in great disorder. I continue now after 3 hours running about and arranging our rooms. It is awful, we are arranging a living room for us girls and then my room and Deidi’s for Rasso, and to send Deidi’s things away, and then also the things of my governess who died in Leutstetten. She had lots of things here too. I am quite tired now. We have a second summer here. The last two days were terribly hot, but today it is better. We play tennis and other things, it is quite amusing now. I must finish as we are going to dinner now. I hope you are all well. We spent a nice Christmas here in my new home. But it is rather cold here now and bad weather. I think I am forgetting to write English, but I must often speak it as there are many English people here in Cannes. This is our little house. With best Deidi Left: Mandelieu was the settling place for Pedro’s mother and the birthplace of his and Deidi’s children, Prince Luiz, Prince Eudes and Prince Bertrand. Prince Luiz of Orleans-Braganza (born 6th June 1938) is the head of the Vassouras branch of the House of Orléans-Braganza and a claimant to the defunct Brazilian throne. The Vassouras branch claims the throne in opposition to the Petrópolis branch of the Orléans- Braganzas, headed by Prince Pedro Carlos of Orléans-Braganza. Though both Prince Luiz and Prince Pedro Carlos are great-great- grandchildren of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, of the House of Braganza, they contest leadership over the Brazilian Imperial Family due to a dynastic dispute concerning their fathers, who were cousins. 14th July 1937 14th July 1937 Princess Letter 22 14th July 1937 Leutstetten to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine, Thank you so much for your good wishes for my engagement. I am very happy, I have found the best man one can imagine and we are awaiting with impatience for the day of our marriage. We fixed it to be the 19th August. It will be at Nymphenburg, a beautiful castle at the end of Munich, where I was born and where we always lived until after the Great War. Later I will live at the south of France near Cannes. We want to pass our honeymoon in Italy. I was very glad that you are coming to Germany for the summer. If you come to Bavaria we hope to see you too one day. You could visit us in August when you are in Munich. If you come in the beginning of August I could still see you and you would also see my fiancée, only don’t come in the last days before my wedding because we would have no time then. In Bavaria there are many beautiful towns to see, Wurzburg, Nurnberg, Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl, that is a little town just so now as it was hundred’s of years ago, Regensburg, Landshut, Hugsburg, Lindau and Munich and you would also go in the mountains. They are grand you will see. Muck is very pleased with the book you sent her, Loll will send you some photos, it is one she took on the sailing boat of me and my fiancée. Now I am a little lonely here because he had to go back to France to get some papers for our wedding. I hope soon to hear from you again and of your plans for the summer. 2nd July 1937 2nd July 1937 Princess Letter 21 2nd July 1937 Leutstetten to 27 Queen Square Dear Madeleine! I have great news to tell you. Deidi is engaged. Now please don’t get struck by the lightning but she really is. He is called Prince Pierre Henri of Orleans-Braganza and is 28 years old. He is very nice and good and they are awfully happy together. He is not tall, and brown and very sympathetic. He used to live near Cannes on the Riviera but he really is half French, half Brazilian. You see his great grandfather or grandfather has been Emperor of Brasilia. I believe they are going to live at Mandelieu near Cannes or somewhere on the Riviera. But they have not made up their minds to that yet. They want to become married on the 17th August, but they are not quite sure as to that as a cousin of his is to be married at almost the same time. Anyway we shall not return to Sarvar before September. They fell in love at Lindau because he is a cousin to some of our cousins there. That is why we have been staying so much at Lindau. Now what about you coming to the continent and to Germany? Why not come to Lindau for a few weeks. It is a lovely old town on the lake and you may go swimming and rowing or paddling or sailing as much as you like. And then please come to Munich. It has got the most beautiful buildings and picture-galleries and museums. One could spend month’s sight seeing. I am sorry not to be able to invite you for a stay at Leutstetten but we really have no room. We should be glad to see you for a day here and meet you at Munich and at Lindau. We are not going anywhere this summer. Now we are busy preparing for the Silver Jubilee of our parents. It will be next week and we have heaps to do. We shall have about fifteen to twenty guests. Then we shall arrange Deidi’s wedding. It will be at Munich but we are not sure where. Maybe at Nymphenburg, a lovely Rococo chateau just outside the city. Deidi and most of us were born there. Our parents used to live there till after the war. Deidi’s fiancé is here now for a week or two. I shall snap-shot them and send you the foto. It was awfully exciting to see them fall in love at Lindau, you may be sure of that. Good-byes for today, please forgive my not writing earlier but I could not tell you before they were engaged, and it is so difficult not to tell at all. 26th March 1937 26th March 1937 Princess Letter 16 26th March 1937 Schloss Moos to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! Please excuse me for not writing to you such a long time but my letters are always so silly that I don’t like to write. I am staying with my cousin Therese Preysing for Easter. She is two years younger than I, but we understand ourselves very well. My cousin must go to an “institute” or college, how you say in England, after Easter. I would not like to go myself and I think she does not like it either. I had to cut this card as it does not get into the envelope otherwise. My cousin has five little lambs here and one has to give them milk with the bottle. It is very amusing to feed them like that. They are so nice and tame. Today I am not going out as I have a bad cough. It is very silly to have to stay at home I find. We are invited to a wedding in the neighbourhood, in the middle of April. There will be more than 150 persons present, I am so afraid of it, that I sometimes wish not to go to it. But I think it will be quite nice and amusing after the first few moments. Only I find it always so bad to have to go before so many old ladies and to speak with persons whom one scarcely knows by name. We are hoping that one may dance on the “Brautsoiree” as we call it (the evening before the wedding). Deidi wont go as she was at so many other weddings, and she doesn’t even know the family.
