Independent State of Croatia (stamps of) - see 35/40 (Independent State of Croatia (NDH) — commercial cover from Zagreb to Siemens-Schuckertwerke A.G., Nuremberg, Germany, postmarked Zagreb 1 on 20 September 1941. The cover is franked with two 2-dinar provisional stamps created by overprinting 4-dinar Kingdom of Yugoslavia King Peter II definitives with “NEZAVISNA DRŽAVA HRVATSKA” (Independent State of Croatia). This provisional issue was introduced on 16 May 1941, shortly after the Axis invasion and dismemberment of Yugoslavia and the proclamation of the NDH on 10 April. The two stamps provide a total franking of 4 dinars. Their heavy black overprints, obscuring the portrait and Yugoslav identity of the original stamps, provide a particularly graphic postal manifestation of the political regime change. The envelope represents genuine contemporary commercial use of the provisional issue between Zagreb and Germany rather than a philatelically produced usage.)
