Ref: 18.02.1939 Mi.688 - The Volkswagen - The People's car, designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. The cost of the car was to be 990 RM. Their sale and manufacture was a state project. A new factory at Fallersleben was built in 1938, destined to be one of the largest car factories in the world. The public had to register for one of the new cars, and then pay monthly instalments (or you could pay cash up front), but one would not receive the car until their registration number was reached. Once you owned a Volkswagen no one could take it away from you and at the same time you could neither sell it or give it away. The state deemed the Volkswagen a necessity and not a luxury (in this way the owner could still apply for charity relief etc.) If you stopped payments, 20% of the money already paid was deducted and the remainder returned, although it was not in that person's interest to do so and it could be construed as anti-state. By the time the factory was ready to start production, the war had broke out and the factory was immediately turned over to war production. The few cars that had been delivered were immediately confiscated and used in the war effort, the owners given a voucher promising replacement after the war. Unsurprisingly, none of the money collected was ever refunded and post war civil actions against Volkswagen were unsuccessful. • Schwerte Cancellation

1st October 1947 JB: Schwerte 1st October 1947 JB: Schwerte 01.10.1947 Schwerte Special Cancellatioin.jpeg 01.10.1947 Schwerte Special Cancellatioin.jpeg 1/1 'Collectors' postcard with special cancellation commemorating 1000 years of Schwerte (a lesser seen cancellation - although in this case it should be noted that no postage stamp has been cancelled. Other postcards, almost identical, were sent by Otto Kusel). There may be a significance in the postage stamp used - the colours of the Schwerte flag are red and white (apparently agreed in 1947). The building depicted in the cancellation is the Town Hall (now a museum). Ref: 01.10.1947, JB:Schwerte1/681 Note: Schwerte was without a special cancellation up to this point in 1947. Schwerte Schwerte is situated in the Ruhr valley, at the south-east border of the Ruhr Area. South of Schwerte begins the mountainous Sauerland region. After the local government reforms of 1975 Schwerte consists of the following districts: Schwerte, Holzen, Westhofen, Ergste, Geisecke, Villigst, and Wandhofen Schwerte received civic rights in the 12th century. The railway facility in the eastern district of Schwerte became a branch of the Buchenwald concentration camp in April 1944. The camp had 445 prisoners in August and 670 in November 1944. The number of escapees was comparatively high; in November 1944 48 prisoners escaped. The camp in Schwerte was disbanded in December 1944 and the remaining prisoners were brought back to Buchenwald.
