30th August 1938 1/0 30th August 1938 Sarvar to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! Many thanks for you letter. It is raining hard this morning. I went for a ride, but had to return soon. Me and my horse were very wet. I begin recovering from the wedding. I was tied. This week Deidi and her family have left us. I am sorry. Her baby boy is such a darling. I am looking forward to seeing them again in November, when they are coming to the shootings. Her husband is very keen on it. He has just bought new guns. Baby must be in Luzern (Swiss) by now. She has gone from Budapest to Yugoslavia, where she met a friend who is married there. Then she went along the coast to Venice. She spent her time on the Lido, bathing and sight-seeing. She was delighted. Then she went to Aquileia and the Lake Garda. She stayed in Malcesine some days. Now she went to Switzerland and stayed there till mid-September. She will go to Achberg near Lindau. Her house will be quite small, near an old castle. I went to a very nice dance last Saturday. There were about 60 people with the Counts Erdody. The gypsies played until 5 or 6 next morning. It was great fun. I hope you had nice holidays and the weather was fine. It is a depressing sight being near a lake when it rains. Did you go to the theatre in London? What did you see? It must be great fun to go shopping in London. I always enjoy shopping. We have got Aileen Shepherd here. She is 17. She is the girl with whom Muck stayed near Birmingham. She has to go to a Polish convent next week. She is very nice. I am looking forward to see “Mr Deeds Goes To Town”. Gary Cooper is my favourite and I am sure he is very good in this comedy too. Did you see it? Going to the pictures is the only fun you have when it is raining. If you would like a foto of Babys wedding, write to me, please. I have none here to send you now, as all we can spare are sent away. Mami will order more and then you’ll get one. I think I have done enough writing for to-day. Much love Loll Contact Brief History to inform us of additional information regarding this page

Letter sent by 'Muck' (Princess Adelgunde Maria) to Madeleine Pinkerton. Ref: 14.08.1938 14th August 1938 1/3 Letter sent by 'Muck' (Princess Adelgunde Maria) to Madeleine Pinkerton. Ref: 14.08.1938 There are 60 letters in the 'Wittlesbach' series, written by the four Princesses . SEE THE FOOT OF THIS PAGE FOR LINKS TO THESE LETTERS Current letter 14th August 1938 Sarvar to Hotel Belle-Rive et du Lac, Thonon Les Bains Dear Madeleine! I am awfully sorry because Loll told me that you seem to be very cross with me because I did not yet write to you. I don’t know how Loll manages to find any time at all for writing, but I really don’t! Besides I am playing the concertina which takes away still more of my time, since I am practicing it every minute I can spare. I really thought it was enough having written to your mother to say how I had enjoyed my visit to Bath. I am sure Robert is also waiting for a letter from me but will you please tell him that I’m afraid he will have to wait still an awfully long time. Now Baby’s wedding is over and the guests left, except Deidi with her husband and baby who are going to stay still a fortnight. We are very busy just now, packing away Baby’s things so that we can send them off. They are going to stay somewhere near Lindau. Baby wrote several times, saying how they are enjoying their honeymoon. They were in Budapest and now they are in Yugoslavia and going on to Italy. On their way they visit lots of relations and friends. If you give them your address they might come and see you on the way back. My Scottish friend is still staying with us and tonight the English girl will come too. Ludwig and I are driving to meet them. The others all went out in the wood to pik nik and pik mushrooms but now it has started to rain and so I think they will come home earlier. How do you all enjoy your holiday? It must be lovely on the Lake Geneve! The other day we went to the lake Balaton where we bathed. It is so flat that you must walk out quite far until you are able to swim. The water generally is awfully warm but there are such big waves and so often storms that it does not seem to be safe for sailing. Half way round the lake we saw a herd of real Hungarian cattle which is light grey with immensely long horns. We also saw a herd of buffalo which looks marvellously wild. The country there is very picturesque, just as one imagines Hungary, rather flat, no trees and very badly growing grass and a few houses and stables one sees are all covered with straw. I was quite thrilled because Sarvar does not look like that at all. I think it is too near Austria and we had never been so far in that direction. Why don’t you go to the lake Balaton once for your holidays? Please give my love to all and thank you for having been so nice to me while I stayed with you. Yours sincerely, Muck Contact Brief History to inform us of additional information regarding this page

The wedding went off all right. It was a very busy time for us. We have 42 guests there. Of course Marieliesel was here too, she was one of the 8 bridesmaids. She enjoyed riding our horses very much. Deidi is still here with her husband and child. The little boy is perfectly sweet, he is very intelligent for his two months. Baby is very happy, she must be somewhere in Italy or Jugoslavia now. She is going over all the European lakes. The Balaton here, the West- Italian lakes, some of the Swiss and she is going to live near the Lake of Constance, quite near Lindau. I saw their house when I was there this spring. Muck has arrived here safely, didn’t she write to you or your mother? But her trunk has not yet arrived. Now we have heard that it is somewhere in Budapest. Maybe it’ll come in a fortnight or so!! Mucks Scottish friend Mharie Irvine is here with us. Next week the other girl Eileen Shepherd will come here too. It ought to improve my English after all. We are going to picnic today on the Balaton, Hungary’s biggest lake. It is about 50 miles from here. I am very glad the wedding is over, I was so tied I could hardly walk after it. Now I am recovering. It was so hot too, that we went bathing with all our guests as often as we could. I cant make up my mind to finish this letter properly. SEE THE FOOT OF THIS PAGE FOR LINKS TO THESE LETTERS Current letter The current letter has no envelope 24th July 1938 Sarvar to 27 Queens Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! Thank you very much for your letter. Please forgive for not answering sooner. I have been away from Sarvar. I went to Bavaria with my father and Ludwig. Ludwig was sailing in the regattas. I went to Lindau to my relations. Baby, the naughty girl, opened your letter and then sent it to me. I was very lucky to meet Muck in Munchen and went sight-seeing for two days with Mharie Irvine, Mucks Scottish friend. Muck stayed for some more days in Bavaria, while I went home to Sarvar. I have been very busy preparing everything for Babys wedding. We shall be about 40 persons. And are very proud to be able to have 13 guests in the castle. The rest must stay with some neighbours as the only hotel here is very bad. Yesterday Muck arrived with Mharie. Today we have had grand festivities about a flag-dedication. Yesterday there was a serenade in the courtyard. 25.VII I had no time to continue yesterday. There is already one of my cousins staying here. This week we expect some of the aunts and heaps of cousins. We are a very big family. I am looking forward to see Deidi with husband and son. Thanks awfully much for the film books. Baby and I spent some very good afternoons studying them. Muck has just had a fitting of her bridesmaid dress. Mine is finished a long time ago. We will be about 8 bridesmaids. Rasso and a brother of Marieliesl Croy will bear the train, which is 3 yards on the ground. We are all very excited about the wedding and I have still heaps to do. So good-bye. Muck was delighted with her stay in Bath. It was so kind of you to ask her. She enjoyed herself very much.
