24th August 1941 'Fallschirmjäger' Official postcard from the NSDAP Kreisfilmstelle, Kreisleitung Chemnitz, postmarked 24th August 1941, to Party member Albert Langenhahn, Chemnitz. The reverse concerns the distribution to schools of the 1940 Tobis documentary Fallschirmjäger, a 31-minute film depicting the training and combat preparation of German paratroopers. The Kreisfilmstelle informs Langenhahn that it possesses only one copy, expects exceptionally heavy demand and therefore requires immediate booking for a specified day; significantly, it orders that the film must under no circumstances remain in any school for longer than one day. The card provides direct contemporary evidence of the NSDAP's organised distribution of military-themed films through its district film apparatus and their circulation within German schools, in this instance only three months after the highly publicised German airborne invasion of Crete. 1st December 1941 ABP Berlin: Stamp export permit Official Auslandbriefprüfstelle Berlin (Foreign Mail Examination Office) correspondence, postmarked Berlin-Charlottenburg on 1st December 1941, and addressed to Frau Tiedemann, Wesermünde, Berckumerstr. 36. The accompanying official document reads: “2 postage stamps. Removed from your letter dated 26th November 1941 to Zahnleiter, Brooklyn, N.Y., U.S.A. The export of postage stamps without an export permit is prohibited.” It then cites the relevant German regulations governing the prohibition of the export and import of goods, including the Order of 27th March 1939 and subsequent amendments of 1939 and 1940. The document therefore records the actual intervention of the German authorities: Frau Tiedemann had enclosed two postage stamps in a letter to the United States, which were discovered and removed during examination of the foreign mail because she did not possess the required Ausfuhrbewilligung (export permit). The surviving envelope and explanatory document provide particularly direct evidence of German wartime controls over the international movement of philatelic material. The timing adds further historical interest: the original letter was posted on 26th November 1941, and this notification was sent on 1st December 1941, only ten days before Germany declared war on the United States on 11th December 1941. 12th December 1941 Feldpost: FPN 17469, Yugoslavia German Feldpost letter written on 5th December 1941 and cancelled on 12th December 1941, sent under Feldpostnummer 17469 to Frau Erna [surname presently unidentified] in Dresden. FPN 17469 was associated with a Wehrmacht Propaganda-Kompanie: surviving bibliographical records identify the Armee-Nachrichtenblatt: Frontzeitung unserer Armee, published between 1939 and 1944, as being issued by “Prop. Komp. Feldpost Nr. 17469.” The Feldpost number is also recorded in connection with the army newspaper Der Sieg. These publications formed part of the Wehrmacht's organised dissemination of military news, political material and propaganda to German servicemen. The most unusual feature is the paper itself. It bears the Cyrillic heading “КАБИНЕТ МИНИСТРА ДВОРА” — “Kabinet Ministra Dvora”, or “Cabinet/Office of the Minister of the Court” — together with the royal heraldry of the Karađorđević dynasty of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, rather than Imperial Russian arms as initially believed. The Serbian Royal Family's heraldic history confirms the distinctive royal and dynastic arms employed by the Karađorđević monarchy. The German serviceman was therefore reusing official Yugoslav Royal Court stationery only months after the Axis invasion and defeat of Yugoslavia in April 1941. This raises the intriguing possibility that the paper was acquired as a consequence of the German occupation, although neither the stationery nor the Feldpost number alone proves that the writer was personally stationed in Yugoslavia when the letter was written. The letter also refers to receiving a parcel and cigarettes and to the hope that the unit would eventually reach a “better area”. Taken together, the Wehrmacht propaganda connection and the reuse of former Yugoslav Royal Court stationery make this a particularly interesting piece of wartime Feldpost.
