17th October 1936 1/0 17th October 1936 Leutstetten to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! Thank you very much for your letter. Please excuse my not writing you, but I too had no time. Now for the moment I am alone, but Mami and Muck will soon return from Munich. Loll and Deidi are at Lindau for some days at our aunts Calabrian I have to learn with my governess, and if I am free I have to go out. I have always school from 8 in the morning till a quarter pass eleven, and every afternoon piano lesson and homework from five till 7 in the evening. Then we have supper at seven and afterwards we often go to the opera in Munich. Yesterday we saw “Zar and Carpenter”(or how it is called in English) of Lortzing. We took our two eldest cousins of Uncle Rupprecht with us. They are 13 and 12 years old. Some days before we had seen “The Barber of Sevilla” which I liked very much. Last week we saw “Lohengrin” of Wagner. Loll did not go, because she doesn’t like it. Tomorrow we go to a horse-racing. I hope it will be good weather, or we will be frozen to death! The last days were quite nice, but last week we had 30cm of snow. A lot of trees and branches broke off it was if the leaves are still on the trees. We have rather often visits, so you see we are not left lonely as in Sarvar. Papi and Ludwig went back to Sarvar on the 15th. They have the big autumn shootings now. It is a pity we are not there, I liked it very much. Papi will return next month, but Ludwig has to stay till Xmas. I think I wrote you a lot of things which don’t interest you at all, but I can’t write letters. Please excuse my mistakes, I only hope you can read all. 17th September 1936 1/0 17th September 1936 Schloss Wildenwart, Post Prien, Oberbayern to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! Thank you very much for your letter and the photos. They are very well, especially the family group. At last mine are ready so I enclose them here. I hope you like them. I spent my birthday very nicely. I got a beautiful fur coat, and a broche, (I don’t know how one calls it, it is French, a medal with diamonds or so) and wool for a new jersey in dark red. My black one is finished, its quite nice. What about your blouse? Did you finish it or are you still embroidering it. Please tell me the mistakes I make, because I want to correct them. We did a lot of yachting but now the weather is too bad and Papi went to Sarvar to shoot stags. So we can’t go without him. Ludwig is in Hungary too studying hard. But he managed to shoot a very good stag too. In Hungary one does only shoot, not hunt on horseback, even foxes. Deidi is in Landau with some cousins. Muck, Baby and I are staying here for a week with two aunts. We are living in an old castle near a lake called Chimensee. You can find it on a map. I’m sorry one can’t see the lake from here. But we have a beautiful view of all the mountains. We came here by car on the Reichstatebahn. It was great. We even met an English car. I saw lots of English in Munich. The whole town was full of them. I had to think of you every time I met some. I don’t want to be rude, only I don’t know how to say otherwise. I do think of you very often, besides. I was in no cinema yet. Muck and Baby were yesterday in Flitterwochen (Honeymoon) with Anny Ondra. I’m sure you never saw her Left: Anny Ondra (15th May, 1903 – 28th February, 1987) was a Czechoslovak film actress whose second husband was German boxing great Max Schmeling. although she is rather famous in Germany. They say it was very funny. Tonight we go to see "Schuhplatteln" the national dance of Bavaria. They do it in an inn. I’m rather keen on seeing it. Our Circus is going quite well. I have to play in a theatre at the beginning. I am supposed to be a magician, Rasso my servant, Baby a red cock. I wonder how she will do. The costume is rather a difficulty. Good bye for today. 14th September 1936 Dear Madeleine 3 1/3 14th September 1936 Leutstetten to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine, Thank you very much for your dear letter which gave me a lot of pleasure. I did not expect you would write for my birthday, as even my best friend always forgets it. I hope your new Swiss “Fraulein” will be nice and that you soon learn a lot of German so that you will understand German letters, I hate writing English I cannot do it well. Since we are back we have been in no pictures, only twice in the theatre, once we took Rasso with us, he was very excited and pleased. We only saw one opera now:- Don Giovanni of Mozart. It is very beautiful. We were sailing a lot now, once I took part in a sailing race with my father, but we had bad luck and were last. The evening there was dancing in the sailing club, I went there with my brother and danced till 4 in the morning. It was very amusing. I have finished the pink blouse I was knitting in Middelkerke. It is nice. We have been at some horse racing in Munich now, once there was an English horse, it pleased us most from the beginning and it won the race. It was called Gilt. Ludwig has gone back to Sarvar in Hungary to finish his studies, he was very sorry to leave. I will get to Lindau tomorrow to visit my cousins. I will stay there for sometime. It is a very nice place at the Bodensee. Rasso has his teacher back and must learn now, he does not like it and is very lazy. Baby has holidays still for some time. My best greetings to all of you.
