In five regions of the Soviet occupation zone, including West Saxony, new stamps were issued from June 1945. In philately , West Saxony refers to the stamp issues, the part of the former Reichspostdirektion Leipzig located west of the Elbe as well as the Mulde and the Zwickauer Mulde. This area was occupied by the Americans until 30th June 1945 and there was no postal traffic. This only began under the Soviet occupation on 23rd July 1945 in Leipzig and was gradually resumed. On 6th August 1945, postcards and letters were accepted throughout the Soviet occupation zone. The first stamps appeared on 28th September 1945, until then cash franking was carried out. In the West Saxony area, a total of 26 definitive stamps and 18 special stamps were issued between September 1945 and May 1946, four special stamps were issued as a block of stamps. In Saxony (Province, East and West Saxony) from 29th October to 10th December 1945, all still valid German zone, OPD and local editions were allowed to be used for franking; from 11th December 11th 1945 only the OPD and local editions of the Soviet zone. Ref: 29.12.1941 Reichspostdirektion (RPD) Hand-stamped instructions and declarations From 1st April 1934, the senior postal directorates were called the Reichspostdirektion (RPD). The task of a senior post office was to relieve the burden on the general post office in Berlin. As a new middle authority, they had to manage the post offices operating in their district, personnel management and cash management. The senior postal director ran the administration in the district entrusted to him independently and under his own responsibility. Due to the reorganisation of the Saar region in 1935, the number of senior postal directorates grew again to 41 with the establishment of the Saarbrücken senior postal directorate. In National Socialist Germany, the number of senior postal directorates rose to 51 due to the incorporation of additional areas. The ten new senior postal directorates were located in Aussig, Gdansk, Graz, Innsbruck, Karlsbad, Klagenfurt, Linz (Donau), Poznan, Troppau and Vienna. Conquered and occupied areas were connected to the German Reichspost through the 'Deutsche Dienstpost…' organisation, the post offices were Germanised and later looked after by the Reichspostdirektion. On 1st January 1940, Danzig had to supply 373 post offices and offices, Gumbinnen 10, Königsberg 25, Oppeln 263 and Posen. In the course of simplifying administration during the war, 13 Reich postal directorates were abolished in 1943 (Aachen, Bamberg, Karlsbad, Kassel, Köslin, Landshut (Bavaria), Oldenburg (Oldb), Potsdam, Regensburg, Speyer, Trier, Troppau and Würzburg ). On May 8, 1945, there were still 38 Reich postal departments. 14th March 1945 Überroller Mail 14th March 1945 Uberroller mail FURTHER RESEARCH REQUIRED. Überroller mail. Correspondence written and dated on 3rd March 1945 with cancellation from Wiesengründ (Sudetengau) to an address in Wiesbaden. Franked with 4 & 8 Pf Hitler head definitive stamps that appear to have passed through the domestic German postal system but with further transmission ceasing and the processing of the mail resuming with the British occupation making this 'Uberroller mail'- 'overtaken' mail (postal matter accepted by the Third Reich German or German occupied postal authorities and delivered by the Allied Occupation Forces after the German surrender). The cover has been opened and resealed with 'MIL. CEN.-CIVIL MAILS' tape by American military censors, with hand-stamp '13239' censor to lower left corner. As with other covers of this type the applied Hitler stamps remained un-obliterated. Ref: 14.03.1945 Detail from the written correspondence shows the date as '12.3.45' and it has been assumed that the franking to the Hitler head stamps is the 14th of March (the month numeral is very difficult to read).
