  • Princess Letter 59

3rd January 1940 1/2 3rd January 1940 Sarvar to 26 Pen-Hill Road, Cardiff Dear Madeleine! I wonder if you ever got my letter which I wrote in November. Did you get our Xmas card? But I am sure you must, as you sent me that marvellous calendar “Beautiful Britain”. Many thanks! You gave me a great pleasure with it. In the morning I was looking at the old one and feeling sad the whole year has gone round. And then, the post brought the new one. How pleased I was! It is even more beautiful than the last. It has got 4 technicolour pictures and all of the pictures are marvellous. Yesterday I copied the “Castle of Harlech” in pencil-drawing. And I want to do some more, I enjoy drawing very much. There is very little else to do now, as the Xmas preparations are over. I read and knit and listen in to the wireless. And I go skating. In our park there is a pond and now it has frozen very hard for a fortnight. So the ice is very good, smooth like a looking-glass and very hard. I noticed that when I fell down!! Muck is practicing all the Cecilia College tricks, but I am not as clever as she. When we are tied of good skating, we start a hockey match. That’s great fun, only we are 4 or 6 players instead of 18. Towards the end of the month we are invited to a wedding of our cousin in Germany. I would like to go there, weddings are always great fun. But I wonder if it’s possible. Anyway, Baby will remain here. Dearest Madeleine, please forgive me for not sending you anything for Xmas. But things are so complicated here, for everything one has to write to Budapest and ask for permission at the National Bank. And everybody is allowed to send out one parcel in a month. So now I can’t send you anything except my fondest love and best wishes for the New Year. Loll

  • Kriegerdenkmal Munich

19th June 1942 Kriegerdenkmal, Munich 1/1 Postcard depicting the crypt and the statue of the fallen soldier at the Kriegerdenkmal at the Hofgarten in Munich. Ref: 19.06.1942 Also see 29/31 Kriegerdenkmal, Munich The Kriegerdenkmal ('warrior memorial') in the Hofgarten in Munich was built for commemorating those killed in action in World War I from Munich. It is located on the eastern end of the Hofgarten, in front of the Bayerische Staatskanzlei. In the middle of a rectangular pit an open crypt is located, containing the statue of a fallen soldier. The 2.25 meters deep pit measures 28×17 meters and is clad in Muschelkalk. Four cornered stairs lead down into it. On the north Muschelkalk wall of this outer room is a relief of marching soldiers and in contrast, the southern wall has a relief of a burial ground. The crypt itself consists of 12 blocks of stone which carry a 2 meters thick and 250 tons heavy roof panel. The stones form a room of 7.30×3.50 meters. 12 stairs – 5 on each long side and 1 on each short side – each one with 7 steps, lead down to the larger-than-life size monument of the fallen soldier. The memorial was designed by sculptor Karl Knappe and the architects Thomas Wechs and Eberhard Finsterwalder. Bernhard Bleeker created the monument of the fallen soldier and its base of red marble. The original marble statue was replaced by a bronze cast in 1972, made by Thomas Wimmer, and is now exhibited in the Bavarian Army museum in Ingolstadt. Rupprecht, Crown Prince of Bavaria, the son of the last Bavarian King, inaugurated the memorial site in 1924. However, it was only entirely finished in 1928. It is now a cultural heritage. Originally, the names of the KIA from Munich were engraved into the walls. Due to the damage from World War II, the memorial was rebuilt without the names, as the old inscription was destroyed and the list of names that was originally used became lost. The new inscription read, ' Zum Gedenken/ an die 22.000 Gefallenen/ 11.000 Vermissten/ 6.600 Opfer des Luftkrieges/ der Stadt München/ 1939-1945 ' ('For the commemoration/ of the 22,000 killed in action/ 11,000 missing in action/ 6,600 casualties of the aerial warfare/ in the city of Munich/ 1939-1945') was added on the inside. Note that the image predates the Nazi regime resulting in one the flags being manipulated by the platemaker (whilst the aft flag remains that of Imperial Germany). Ref: 05.08.1934 Salonschnelldampfer S.S. Hertha From Wikipedia.de The Hertha , built on the Stettiner Oderwerke with construction number 547, was put into service on 7th June 1905 by the Stettiner Dampfschiffs-Gesellschaft JF Braeunlich. It was initially used in the postal service on the Sassnitz – Trelleborg line, the forerunner of the so-called Royal Line, then from 1909 in the seaside resort service from Stettin and Świnoujście to the seaside resorts on the east coast of Rügen. The Imperial Navy requisitioned the steamship on 6th August 1914 and initially had it converted into an auxiliary hospital ship E. However, it did not start sailing as such, but, after another renovation, was used as an auxiliary mining ship from September 1914. After the First World War, the shipping company got its ship back and used it in sea service in East Prussia and on occasional trips to Bornholm and Copenhagen. From October 1939, the Hertha was used by the Kriegsmarine as a residential and target ship for the 25th and, from 1943, the 23rd submarine flotilla. After the end of the Second World War she was delivered to Great Britain. As a reparation, she sailed under the Greek flag as Heimara (Χειμάρρα) from 1946 and sank on 19th January 1947 in fog at around 5:40 a.m. about an hour and a half after making contact with the rocky reef Derakotos, northwest of the island of Parthenopi (Parthenopi: main island of the Verdougia Islands) in the south Gulf of Euboea between Aghia Marina on Attica and Styra on Euboea. There was a boiler explosion and power outage. The accident, the largest in Greek shipping, killed more than 380 people out of 544 passengers and 86 crew members. It was only hours later that other ships arrived at the scene of the accident to help. Because of bad weather at Cavo Doro (southern tip of Euboea), the captain chose the route from Salonika to Piraeus through the Gulf of Euboea via the port of Chalkis. The British magazine Parade reported that the Heimara had sunk due to a sea mine, which later turned out to be incorrect. Ref: 04.04.1933 (6 Pf), 16.06.1933 (15 Pf). Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832) was a German polymath, who is widely regarded as the greatest and most influential writer in the German language. His work has had a profound and wide-ranging influence on Western literary, political, and philosophical thought from the late 18th century to the present day. A poet, playwright, novelist, scientist, statesman, theatre director, and critic, his works include plays, poetry and aesthetic criticism, as well as treatises on botany, anatomy, and colour. In 1832, Goethe died in Weimar of apparent heart failure. He is buried in the Ducal Vault at Weimar's Historical Cemetery. Source: Wikipedia But what are Schiller, Goethe, or Shakespeare when compared with the heroes of our modern German literature! Old, worn-out, and outmoded--nay, obsolete. For it was typical of this epoch that not only were its own products bad, but in the process it reviled everything that was truly great in the past... The more vile and miserable are the men and products, the more they will hate and denigrate the ideal achievement of former generations. What these people would like best is to completely destroy every vestige of the past, so that, by excluding the standard of comparison, their own kitsch could be looked upon as 'art.'
