I am awfully sorry because Loll told me that you seem to be very cross with me because I did not yet write to you. I don’t know how Loll manages to find any time at all for writing, but I really don’t! Besides I am playing the concertina which takes away still more of my time, since I am practicing it every minute I can spare. I really thought it was enough having written to your mother to say how I had enjoyed my visit to Bath. I am sure Robert is also waiting for a letter from me but will you please tell him that I’m afraid he will have to wait still an awfully long time. Now Baby’s wedding is over and the guests left, except Deidi with her husband and baby who are going to stay still a fortnight. We are very busy just now, packing away Baby’s things so that we can send them off. They are going to stay somewhere near Lindau. Baby wrote several times, saying how they are enjoying their honeymoon. They were in Budapest and now they are in Yugoslavia and going on to Italy. On their way they visit lots of relations and friends. If you give them your address they might come and see you on the way back. My Scottish friend is still staying with us and tonight the English girl will come too. Ludwig and I are driving to meet them. The others all went out in the wood to pik nik and pik mushrooms but now it has started to rain and so I think they will come home earlier. How do you all enjoy your holiday? It must be lovely on the Lake Geneve! The other day we went to the lake Balaton where we bathed. It is so flat that you must walk out quite far until you are able to swim. The water generally is awfully warm but there are such big waves and so often storms that it does not seem to be safe for sailing. Half way round the lake we saw a herd of real Hungarian cattle which is light grey with immensely long horns. We also saw a herd of buffalo which looks marvellously wild. The country there is very picturesque, just as one imagines Hungary, rather flat, no trees and very badly growing grass and a few houses and stables one sees are all covered with straw. I was quite thrilled because Sarvar does not look like that at all. I think it is too near Austria and we had never been so far in that direction. Why don’t you go to the lake Balaton once for your holidays? Please give my love to all and thank you for having been so nice to me while I stayed with you. Featuring two postage stamps including the Repubilcan 30 c. (Mi.693, Edefil 726). Note that the colours used on the postcard are green, purple and orange. The colour of the Spanish flag at the time was red, yellow and dark purple. Ref: 1.08.1937 (date for this postcard not clear and has therefore been given this date/reference). Barcelona and the Spanish Civil War The July 1936 military uprising in Barcelona was a military uprising in Barcelona, the capital and largest city of Catalonia, Spain on 19th July 1936 which contributed to the start of the Spanish Civil War. Most of the Spanish Army officers in the city supported the coup, but the Civil Guard, the Assault Guard ( Guardia de Asalto ) and the Mossos d'Esquadra remained loyal to the Republican government. Furthermore, Barcelona was one of the strongholds of the anarchist union, the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT). The rebel troops were defeated after one day of bloody combat. The defeat of the military coup in Barcelona was a great success for the Republic, although after the defeat it became clear that the workers' militias – in particular, the anarcho-syndicalist militias – were the ones that really controlled the city. The coup attempt marked the beginning of the Spanish Revolution and also the beginning of a harsh repression in Catalonia against those suspected of being 'fascist' or opposed to the revolution. During the Spanish Civil War, the city, and Catalonia in general, were resolutely Republican. Many enterprises and public services were collectivized by the CNT and UGT unions. As the power of the Republican government and the Generalitat diminished, much of the city was under the effective control of anarchist groups. The anarchists lost control of the city to their own allies, the Communists and official government troops, after the street fighting of the Barcelona May Days. The fall of the city on 26th January 1939, caused a mass exodus of civilians who fled to the French border. The resistance of Barcelona to Franco's coup d'état was to have lasting effects after the defeat of the Republican government. The autonomous institutions of Catalonia were abolished, and the use of the Catalan language in public life was suppressed. Barcelona remained the second largest city in Spain, at the heart of a region which was relatively industrialised and prosperous, despite the devastation of the civil war. The result was a large-scale immigration from poorer regions of Spain (particularly Andalusia, Murcia and Galicia), which in turn led to rapid urbanisation. 27th January 1937 27th January 1937 1/0 27th January 1937 Leutstetten to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine, Thank you very much for your letter I like so much to hear from you. We are all very well. Here we have not yet any snow and we are always waiting for it because we want to ski. At Christmas we got all new ski and dark blue trousers and jackets for it and heavy boots and knitted thick stockings. So we have everything we need, only no snow. We are already quite impatient. Now we had some very cold days and we played ice-hockey on our little skating place in the park. We are only learning to do it but it is very amusing. After Xmas a friend of my brother was here for some days, he had to play with us but first we had to teach him skating. He had never tried it before. He learned it quickly, only he fell a lot. The other day in playing Ludwig went very fast and fell so hard on his head that we had to help him rise and he went home with Mami only half conscious. He remembers nothing now how he came to his room. His face is very swollen and blue and he is now very ugly. Our little cousins always play with us and they will soon play much better than we heavy big girls. We have now also other visits often, uncles, aunts or cousins and other friends. The other day Mami was with Muck, Loll and me in Munich to a big dancing tea, Lolls first dancing in society, she was so pleased. Next week there will be several great dancing parties in Munich. Loll is very excited about them. I will go to Vienna next week for the wedding of my friend Gitta. I hope that I will be invited also to other parties and dances. I will stay there for little more than a week. Baby and Rasso are studying. Last week we saw in the opera Valkerie and Siegfried by Wagner. I knew both already but I always like to see nice plays more than once. We also saw the operetta “Fliedermous” by J. Strauss, that is very amusing, you should see it too. I liked the book you sent me very much. I think I must finish my writing, I am so sleepy that I cannot write well. Good night. Yours truly Deidi.
