I am sorry I can’t return your wishes as it is late now. I had a very nice time staying with a cousin, Countess Therese Preysing. She, or rather her mother has a marvellous castle in Low-Bavaria. Somewhere between Regensburg and Parsau. I am again looking forward to a wedding. Muck and I are going to be bridesmaids. As we shall be wearing the same dresses as at Baby’s wedding, I shall ask Mami to let me have a new evening gown for the soiree. The wedding will be at Nymphenburg Palace, just like Deidi’s. The date is the 6th May. I seem to do nothing except attend weddings the whole year round. Muck and I went skiing up on the mountains near Garmisch-Partenkichen. It was a glorious day with the sun shining, or rather burning. I wish you could have seen us both, we looked like tomatoes. Muck’s nose is peeling off, mine not yet. Did I write to you that Polzer is back in the opera. I am looking forward to seeing him in “Tristan and Isolde”. I hope it is not to long. The last opera I saw was Eugene Onegin by Tchaikowsky, Das Herz by Pfitzner, Wildschutz by Lortzing. I didn’t like “Das Herz”. The music is simply awful. I am looking forward to see Rigaletto, The Girl Of The Golden West and Friedenstag. I saw the film “Kidnapped” and liked it very much. 11th November 1939 Oflag XVIII-B 11th November 1939 Oflag XVIIIB Kriegsgefangenenpost sent from a POW at Oflag XVIIIB at Wolfsberg to an address in Kielce, Poland. Ref: 11.11.1939 Oflag XVIII-B On 19th October 1939, Oflag XVIII-B, a prison camp for officers was set up in Wolfsberg. Its designation derived from defence area XVIII (District Tirol, Salzburg, Kärnten, Steiermark). The place had previously served to house internees during the First World War and remained for the disposition of Polish officer POWs. In February 1941 the camp became Stalag XVIII-A and took in prisoners from Stalag XVII-A in Kaisersteinbruch. The reason for this change was the lack of POW manpower in Districts XVII and XVIII. The aerial view depicts the Berlin Messe (exhibition grounds). The large building to the central left is the main building with entrance hall. Opposite (to the upper central right) is the 'Haus des Rundfunks' (Broadcasting House). Ref: 05.08.1939 16th Greater German Radio and Television Exhibition, Berlin 1939 In 1939 the exhibition was called Grosse Deutsche Funk- und Fernseh-Ausstellung (Great German Radio and Television Exhibition). The Einheits-Fernseh-Empfänger E1 , a TV set designed to be affordable for everybody, was introduced. Plans for large-scale manufacture were thwarted by the outbreak of World War II. Color TV was also introduced (a prototype), based on an invention by Werner Flechsig (cf. shadow mask). 5th September 1939 Ausweis für Rückgeführte 5th September 1939 Repatriated Persons Identification card for repatriated persons. Issued by the NSDAP in Gau Thüringen, Regional District of Erfurt. Featuring the facsimile signature of Deputy Gauleiter Heinrich Siekmeier. Ref: 05.09.1939 - 29/79 ID card for those returned from the Thuringia Gau of the NSDAP. State of Thuringia/ Reg.Bez. Erfurt. Issued to Maria Schaefer, born on 26th December 1897. The owner of the ID card was evacuated from her home community in Saarland to the so-called 'Bergungsgau Thuringia' shortly after the start of the war because of the threat of French attacks. Cards of this type served the evacuees as ID cards in the 'repatriation' areas. The Saar Offensive is the name given to the French assault on western Germany from September 7th–16th, 1939. In September, 1939, German forces were largely concentrating on fighting and defeating Poland, which at that stage was still an active adversary. While they were so engaged, French soldiers made a somewhat hesitant advance on to German soil. The attack was not a success, and by the end of the month, the French forces had been withdrawn.
