26th March 1938 1/0 26th March 1938 Sarvar to 27 Queen Square Dear Madeleine! Thank you very much for your letter. As you see we are all back here in Sarvar. We left Munich on the 3rd, and Muck and I went to some friends for 3 days. We could not go to our aunt, as there seems to have been infant paralysis down there. Mami took Baby to Austria, where her engagement to Archduke Gottfried of Habsburg was announced. Now, what do you say on that? I knew about it since January, but of course was not allowed to talk about it. He is 36 and she nearly 18. They are going to be married on 3rd August. He is very tall and dark and very good-tempered. Rasso likes him so much and always calls him to play and talk to him. I am very happy about it, but the thought of one more of us leaving home is rather sad. Deidi is very well and I am looking forward to seeing her here for Baby’s wedding. Muck wants to go to England next week. She is going with our aunt whose two girls are at Roehampton in the Convent of the Sacred Heart. She will go to London on the 4th or 5th of April and then go on further to a place near Birmingham with a Roehampton girl. She wants to stay there for a month or two and then goes on to Barra Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She got these two invitations through Mother Burnett of Roehampton. We are all very excited about her going there. But she has to be back in July, in time to help for Baby’s wedding. I have got mumps but not very strong. I caught it in Munich at a cocktail party. One of the boys had it and now more than 6 people who were at the party got it. We started tennis again as it is quite like in summer, so warm. The trees are green and birds singing. Even our stork came back already. Stork is a very big bird, white and black with a big nose, living on roofs of houses and eating frogs. 17th October 1937 17th October 1937 1/0 17th October 1937 Sarvar to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! Thank you awfully much for your nice letter and the book. I am delighted to have it. I am very keen on books. We have got a bookcase all for our own, and it is quite full of lovely books. We have it in our own girl’s drawing room. And we feel very proud to have it. Muck and I have writing desks standing here and I really do write quite a lot now, don’t I? I feel quite ashamed for not having written to any of your birthdays. I must have lost the dates. Of course I remember Mr D’Arcy in Pride and Prejudice. But he is not related to our Mary D’Arcy. She is Irish and from Tipperary. She told me D’Arcy is a name often to be heard in England. At the Sacred Heart Convent of Roehampton there were 4 different D’Arcy’s staying there besides her. Now there are two of my cousins staying at Roehampton, while the two smaller ones stay here. They are those that stand near Rasso on Deidi’s wedding foto. Did you recognize Marieliesl? I quite forgot she was there at Middelkerke with us you remember. I saw Anthony Adverse, it is a good film only too long. Olivia de Havilland is charming and Frederic March is a very good actor. But I was sorry he was not Errol Flynn. I would have loved to see him, everybody admires him so much. I am sorry I just missed his great film “The Charge of the Light Brigade”. It was here the day before we arrived in Sarvar. I am counting the days till Deidi’s arrival. We shall soon have the shooting to start and many guests to arrive. That’s most of the fun. I love having guests and seeing people. Tomorrow we shall have the General of Szombathely here for lunch. Muck just calling me to come and play tennis. We have a tennis match now in which everybody has to play against everyone. I believe Ludwig will win or Mary and I shall lose. I am as bad as ever. Or maybe Miss Wright, the cousins’ governess is worse than me. Anyway, we shall see.
