They were designed to be an improvement of Type 1936A and B destroyers. Only two of the five ships, Z46 and Z47 , were ever laid down, and work was halted for a year between 1942 and 1943. Construction was constantly interrupted by numerous problems, predominantly due to air raids, material supply delays and a shortage of copper. The two ships that were laid down, Z46 and Z47 , were blown up by Allied troops in 1945. Source: Wikipedia 2026 TYPE 1937J DESTROYERS The Type 1937J destroyer class was a design created by the Kriegsmarine in 1937. The destroyers were designed as ocean-going escort ships, which could attack and defend convoys in the Atlantic, while also being able to operate in tropical climates. The design was abandoned before any ships were ordered or laid down, largely because the range and speed requirements could not be achieved without reductions in armament, however it went on to influence later project studies: the Type 1938Ac, 1938Ad, and 1938B destroyers. Source: Wikipedia 2026 TYPE 1945 DESTROYERS The Type 1945 destroyers were a planned class of destroyers, for the Kriegsmarine, whose design was based upon that of the Type 1936D and E destroyers. Their plan involved a return to steam boilers, which had been replaced by diesel engines in all ships designs after the Type 1942 destroyers. No ships were ever built, as the end of the war was rapidly approaching. It bears the special “Wehrkampftage der SA 1942 – Sportappell der Betriebe” cancellation associated with the SA military-sports competition in Berlin-Weissensee. The franking comprises a 6 Pfennig Hitler definitive together with the special 6+4 Pfennig Wehrkampftage der SA 1942 commemorative stamp. Hugo Hennemann, born 22nd June 1893 at Kreisfeld, was a master carpenter who had established a business in Hergisdorf before entering municipal office. He became Gemeindeschulze in 1934 and subsequently Bürgermeister. Contemporary Hergisdorf records explicitly describe him as “Parteigenosse Hugo Hennemann”, confirming his membership of the NSDAP. 3rd October 1941 Rudolf Johns This advertising card, postmarked 3rd October 1941, was sent to Professor Dr Rudolf Johns (1900–1984) at Münster and advertises Professor Dr Theodor Ferjancic’s newly published Die moderne Allgemeine Kameralistik, issued by Manzsche Verlagsbuchhandlung of Vienna. The choice of recipient was almost certainly deliberate: Johns was a German economist specialising in municipal economics, public accounting and Kameralistik. He had habilitated in 1934 with a study of the accounting system of German municipalities and had already published work entitled Kameralistik in 1938. His academic career during the Third Reich was complicated by political difficulties; biographical sources state that he lost his Cologne teaching position in 1938 because of his opposition to the Nazi regime, although in 1940 he obtained an extraordinary professorship in business administration at the University of Münster. He remained academically active during the war, publishing Das Problem der öffentlichen Vermögensrechnung und seine Lösung in 1943, although most copies of that work were reportedly destroyed during the war. After 1945 Johns became an ordinary professor at Münster and directed its Kommunalwissenschaftliches Institut from 1945 to 1947 before moving to Tübingen. In 1951 he published the substantially developed Kameralistik: Grundlagen einer erwerbswirtschaftlichen Rechnung im Kameralstil. The 1941 Ferjancic advertisement therefore represents an intriguing contemporary connection between two specialists working on the same form of public-sector accounting. It is possible that Ferjancic’s 1941 work contributed to Johns’s subsequent thinking, but no evidence has yet been found proving that Johns purchased or read the book, or that it directly influenced his 1951 publication. Bochmann gives no detail as to the identity of the soldier depicted in the cancellation, however, this almost certainly depicts Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck (1870-1964), the 'Rommel' of East Africa. In 1936 former governor of German East Africa, Heinrich Schnee established the Reichskolonialbund. In his role as governor Schnee had close personal and operation ties to Lettow-Vorbeck during the First World War. Both men returned as heroes following the armastice and there can be no doubt that such cancellations as the one above were optomising the propaganda value of such a well loved soldier. 4th September 1941 Colonialism: Kämpf mit uns! This four-page letter was posted at Öhringen on the 4th of September 1941 to Gefreiter Gerd Illenberger, via L.G.P.A. Posen, L 23579 (A). The number is presently thought to relate to Sonderstaffel 22, though its exact role and location at that date still need confirming. The letter records the 100-gram parcel limit for items sent east, citing transport priority for ammunition and provisions, mentions tobacco shortages, home radio news about the Eastern Front, and the family's anxiety for Gerd. On the reverse is a "Kampft mit uns!" Reichskolonialbund label, adding a small propaganda detail. Together, the cover and letter offer an interesting snapshot of the home front to Luftwaffe connections in the opening months of the Soviet campaign. Zoll Customs Zollrückzettel : This is a German Reichspost Zollrückzettel (customs return slip), form C 122a, postmarked Dresden-Altstadt 1 on 29th July 1936. The form was used in connection with postal parcels undergoing customs handling and was intended to be collected from the recipient when the parcel was handed over. It provided spaces for an arrival postmark and for recording any Nachgebühr (additional postage charge) or Nachnahme (cash-on-delivery amount), while the printed instruction at the foot required customs return slips to be accounted for by the delivery post office in the same manner as customs parcel cards. Although this example received a Dresden postal cancellation, the principal sections remain uncompleted, suggesting that it was prepared but not subsequently used for an actual customs-parcel delivery.
