3rd February 1937 3rd February 1937 1/0 3rd February 1937 Leutstetten to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine, Thank you so much for your nice letter. We are O.K. I have a party nearly every day and I enjoy it very much. You see they do give real balls here. It is great. Did you ever go to a real ball? Where one is asked to go to supper with a gentleman? And before and after supper one dances a lot. And then there is a Cotillion. It is after the supper that a gentleman comes as asked one for the Cotillion dance. Then one sits down with him and there are funny tricks one is asked to do. Example: six girls stand up in line and each has got a spoon. And they are to run through the hall and catch a potato on that spoon and run back and put the potato into a kettle. The winner gets a prize, or a girl stands at one end of the room and has to throw an orange to someone of the six gentlemen opposite her and who catches the orange is to dance with her. There are flowers brought in and each gentleman gets flowers to give to his favourite girls and the girls get (illustrated above) that are on a pin which they are to give to the same gentlemen. And between, one dances. The flowers and bows are always the favourite things. I had a ball invitation on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, today again and on Friday. On Saturday we shall give a big tea-party and dancing for about hundred people. Muck and I are rather excited, because we are so shy and don’t know what to do. The ball generally lasts till 4 o’clock in the morning, so we sleep till noon. In the afternoon we go for short walks. There is no skating or ice hockey now, it is too warm and there is water everywhere. How I long for snow. Papa has got a dachshund, a young one since yesterday. It sits by my side and howls, because Papa is gone and she loves him so much already. I can’t think with that howling dog near me. Baby is busy learning with her Fraulein. She is too young to go to parties yet. Ludwig is quite alright again. Only his eye is still a little red from his fall. He hates going to parties. We are rather sorry for it. Deidi did not yet write. Ludwig is going back to Sarvar, to Hungary next week maybe. I am reading Daisy Chain by Mrs Younge. It is very tedious and long and old fashioned. I am quite out of my senses by that howling dog. Besides I am sleepy from all these parties. But they are too nice and I enjoy them very much. Of course I invite you to my wedding only I am afraid I never will be married. I cant think of my being married and having children, could you? I should prove to be a very bad housewife as I am not able to cook or sew or do anything. Baby sometimes writes to Mr Lambert and gets photos and long and funny letters from him. I cant think of anything worth while writing so I say goodbye! Heaps of love from Loll P.S. 27th January 1937 27th January 1937 1/0 27th January 1937 Leutstetten to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine, Thank you very much for your letter I like so much to hear from you. We are all very well. Here we have not yet any snow and we are always waiting for it because we want to ski. At Christmas we got all new ski and dark blue trousers and jackets for it and heavy boots and knitted thick stockings. So we have everything we need, only no snow. We are already quite impatient. Now we had some very cold days and we played ice-hockey on our little skating place in the park. We are only learning to do it but it is very amusing. After Xmas a friend of my brother was here for some days, he had to play with us but first we had to teach him skating. He had never tried it before. He learned it quickly, only he fell a lot. The other day in playing Ludwig went very fast and fell so hard on his head that we had to help him rise and he went home with Mami only half conscious. He remembers nothing now how he came to his room. His face is very swollen and blue and he is now very ugly. Our little cousins always play with us and they will soon play much better than we heavy big girls. We have now also other visits often, uncles, aunts or cousins and other friends. The other day Mami was with Muck, Loll and me in Munich to a big dancing tea, Lolls first dancing in society, she was so pleased. Next week there will be several great dancing parties in Munich. Loll is very excited about them. I will go to Vienna next week for the wedding of my friend Gitta. I hope that I will be invited also to other parties and dances. I will stay there for little more than a week. Baby and Rasso are studying. Last week we saw in the opera Valkerie and Siegfried by Wagner. I knew both already but I always like to see nice plays more than once. We also saw the operetta “Fliedermous” by J. Strauss, that is very amusing, you should see it too. I liked the book you sent me very much. I think I must finish my writing, I am so sleepy that I cannot write well. Good night. Yours truly Deidi. 22nd January 1937 22nd January 1937 1/0 22nd January 1936 [postmarked 1937 - a common error on correspondence written at the beginning of the year] Leutstetten to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! Thank you very much for your letter. I think I should have written already a long time ago but I was too lazy and in the holidays we had a guest and never much time. Now I have been ill for a week lying in bed with grippe but I am quite well ever since three days. As we have not much room in our house, a cousin of us who was here in the holidays had to sleep with me and Rasso who generally sleeps with me, with Mammi and Papi. Naturally we talk along time in the evenings and it was usually after 12, when we stopped – Baron Banffy, a student friend of Ludwig was sleeping in my governesses room. You can imagine that we had a lot of fun like that. Once we made a long walk over the moors on a cold day and the ground quite frozen, otherwise it would have been impossible to pass without sinking into the marsh. It was very amusing as we were always afraid of breaking the ice and sink down. In the middle of the moor there was a rather broad brook which was not frozen yet and so we had to jump over it. Naturally Ludwig and Baron B passed easily but Loll the first of us tried to jump with the aid of BB and fell into it into the knee. Then our cousin Thereschen and Deidi jumped and passed well being held on both hands by the boys. Then came my turn and I jumped and got over but unfortunately I slipped upon my knees and L gave me such a push that I got my foot into the water. But I did not get very much water into my shoe. At last Muck joined us and we continued our walk. I think it must have been awfully funny to see all without being obliged to jump over. We learned Bar. B skating and then the second day he had already to play with us ice-hockey. One evening, the last Thereschen was here we made a punch, and danced and played murder in the dark and then played in the dark and again danced etc until it was passed midnight and nanny told us to go to bed. It was much fun. My governess was ill too and came only Sundays after the end of the birthdays. I was very content at that, naturally. The others are going out as one says in German. Yesterday there was a tea party and they seemed to enjoy it very much. They danced a lot and at 7 o’clock they came to fetch me at our uncles because where I waited and we went together to see Siegfried of Wagner. It was very beautiful indeed and I liked it very much. In the holidays we had seen Madam Butterfly which was very good too. I’ll have to stop now as we are going to supper. I hope my English is not too bad. I wrote this in haste. We spent a nice Christmas here in my new home. But it is rather cold here now and bad weather. I think I am forgetting to write English, but I must often speak it as there are many English people here in Cannes. This is our little house. With best Deidi Left: Mandelieu was the settling place for Pedro’s mother and the birthplace of his and Deidi’s children, Prince Luiz, Prince Eudes and Prince Bertrand. Prince Luiz of Orleans-Braganza (born 6th June 1938) is the head of the Vassouras branch of the House of Orléans-Braganza and a claimant to the defunct Brazilian throne. The Vassouras branch claims the throne in opposition to the Petrópolis branch of the Orléans- Braganzas, headed by Prince Pedro Carlos of Orléans-Braganza. Though both Prince Luiz and Prince Pedro Carlos are great-great- grandchildren of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, of the House of Braganza, they contest leadership over the Brazilian Imperial Family due to a dynastic dispute concerning their fathers, who were cousins. I read it immediately and I like it very much. It is very interesting and well written. I love D’Arcy but Lady Catherine de Bourgh is just a haughty and stupid woman. Lizzy & Jane are both very good girls, almost too good to be true. Shall I tell you how we spent our Christmas? The whole day of 24th our sitting room is closed and only Mami, Ludwig & Deidi may enter it in order to help the “Christkind” as we call Jesus. Rasso is told it is him who brings all the lovely things and the Xmas-tree down from the sky. Only in the morning, about 6 o’clock, the whole family assembles and on the sound of a bell, the door opens and we all enter the salon. Some people sing, but as we are all incapable of it, we don’t. We all admire the Xmas tree and the (I don’t know the word for it in English, Krippe Creche in French). Ours is very sweet, all figures in wax. It stands beneath the Xmas tree. All round the room stand tables covered with white linen cloth. On them are displayed all our gifts. We got ski outfits, all of us. Muck and I got evening frocks. Mine is most beautiful, light blue resembling the Empire fashion, Mucks is a taffeta in the colour of her hair. And then I got a book about the Churches, Castles and Hotel de Ville of Flanders and a bag of silver leather for the evening and some yards of yellowish wool to make a dress of it, but I wont make it myself. I have had enough of the pinafore, which I really did finish myself. The others also got books and such things. Baby got a book about the famous Admiral Byrd, who explores the South Pole. She is very fond of it and admires him very much. The other day we went to see the circus. Rasso was very excited and admired it. It was the first he ever saw. Then we took him to the opera to see “Christ-Fairy” and “The Princess and the 7 dwarfs”. Tonight we go to see “Rienzi” over again or maybe Deidi and I go look at Richard II by Shakespeare. They play many Shakespearean plays here and I like them very much. They are much better than some Germans. My favourite will always remain Schiller but I don’t like Goethe. My first film I saw since I am here was “Burgtheater” with Werner Kraus. He is the most famous actor in Germany. I saw him also on the stage in King Lear. I was greatly impressed by it. The film is one of the best. Sorry you have no chance of seeing it. It was worthwhile. Next week carnival begins and I hope I may enjoy some parties and balls. I am so fond of dancing. I sometimes hear on the radio some of the records we used to dance at Middelkerke “The music goes round & round”! Le plus beau de tous les tangos du monde. Tous va tres bien Madame La Marquise”. You remember them don’t you? Do you know the record “Lollipop Shop”. I heard it at Radio Luxemburg.
