20th February 1938 1/0 20th February 1938 Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, Restaurant Walterspiel, Munchen to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! Thank you awfully much for your letter and the Valentine. It is a charming custom to send Valentines. I am sorry I can’t get any here. Besides it is much too late now. We are here in Munich now and are very busy enjoying life. We arrived the 3rd and are staying here till 2nd March because in Lent we are not allowed to dance. I am very busy going to parties. Today we are giving a fancy- dress ball for 140 people. The next four days are big balls too, and cocktail parties and tea-parties. It is such fun to go dancing. I wonder how much of my feet will be left when I go home to Sarvar. Mammi is here too and Muck and Baby. Baby is having sewing lessons but she can’t work in the morning when she was dancing 5 or 6 hours in the night. I do hope our party will be a success, but I’m afraid we have not got enough boys. 16 said they could not come. I am going as Lady Blakeney, you know, the wife of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Baby has got a costume of the Charles I period and Muck goes as a Celtic woman with a big reddish blonde wig. She looks awful with it. I was twice at the opera and saw Margarethe by Gounod which has a most wonderful music. Do you remember Jeanette Macdonald singing parts of it in “San Francisco”. And then I saw a new German opera “Schwarzer Peter”. It is rather stupid and for small children, but the music is nice. I saw a couple of films here but they were all German. I am very sorry they don’t give English or American films here. I hope your “Living Bridge” went off all right. I go skating very often. It is such fun to watch all those clever children in the ice rink. But I always feel ashamed of being so heavy and clumsy compared to them. Ludwig was out last Sunday and I am awfully proud to have got such a smart soldier-brother. I was skiing yesterday for the first time this year. It was great fun and I fell a lot, but I was lucky and neither broke my legs nor my neck. I feel rather stiff however. I am just waiting for the hairdresser to do my hair. I am going to have two beautiful shoulder long curls. The whole day we were busy preparing things for our ball. Muck and I hope to go and see Papi’s two unmarried sisters for some days after carnival. And I hope there is enough snow left till then that we may go on skiing. I am already quite nervous about the ball tonight. It is so difficult to keep smiling and talking polite conversation the whole evening. Brrrrr-I am so shy and nervous about it all. I am very proud because I danced off some of my fat. I must stop now as my hair is all gone dancing too. And I cant think of anything interesting to write to you just now. 2nd February 1938 1/2 2nd February 1938 Sarvar to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! Many thanks for your letter. I am very glad to have got it today. Tomorrow morning we are leaving for Munchen, to enjoy the carnival. Our address will be “Munchen, Hotel Vier Jahiesgeiten”. Mami is taking Muck and Baby and me there for a month. I hope it will be fun. And I hope to go to many balls and parties and to the opera and skating and skiing. Ludwig is in Lengries doing his military service and he promised to take us skiing on his Sundays out. The other day I saw Sonja Henie in her first film, “One In A Million”. Her skating is really wonderful. Today we are going to see a German film “Ave Maria” with the famous tenor Benjamino Gilgi. He is very ugly but has a marvellous voice. Yesterday I was at a party at Steinamanger, 27km from here. It was a “Catholic Evening” but it really was great fun and we three danced so much. My feet hurt still. At the beginning I was very shy to go there with Papi. Mami had such a headache that she had to lie down. But we three came off very well. It is amazing how well all those Hungarians speak German. I did not dance with one who was not able to speak 3 German words. Most of them speak fluently. I don’t know 10 words of Hungarian although we live here since 15 years. Isn’t it a shame! But our house is nearly all German, and even the maids understand some German. I made up my mind to take Hungarian lessons when I come back. But I have made this resolution very often, and always broken it till now. Muck wants to go to England in March or April. I wonder if she really will. I rather think she will. When something has got into her head, she is pretty sure to do it, she is so mule-headed you know. Well, I’m not sure whether mule-headed is very polite, I took it out of some cowboy book. I must tell you that I write without a dictionary. I’m much too lazy to look words up, besides one always catched the wrong sense. I’m very sorry to hear that your Grandfather had died. It is always such a shock to come home and find a telegram there. I must stop now, Anny is so busy packing for Munchen, there is such a row. 27th January 1938 1/0 27th January 1938 Sarvar to 27 Queen Square, Bath Dear Madeleine! I am sure you are very much astonished of getting a letter from me, as I don’t write since the autumn. It’s very funny but it’s always Loll who writes to you and then one gets too lazy to write too. I hope you have not got to study too much and may go to parties. We are going to Munic next week on the 3rd and I hope to enjoy it a lot. On the 1st we have got a large dancing party in the next town and I am going to. It’ll be great fun. We’ll be all dressed alike and then people will never know if we are 3 or 6 sisters. Perhaps we’ll give a party in fancy dress in Munic. I want to learn sewing in Munic and Muck and I hope to be able to do a lot of skating. We do like skating, it’s so amusing. We are always trying to be like Sonja Henie and I think it must be very funny to watch us. Now of course there isn’t any ice and it’s very warm, just like spring. Did one see the “north light” (two days ago) in England too. We didn’t see it and are very sad of it, but other people say it was marvellous. We haven’t got anything to do, so I am sometimes practicing the piano and playing together with Rasso’s governess or also singing. Of course we can’t, but that does not matter. The others are riding everyday but I don’t, so I generally stay in bed rather late. Now we are reading a play of Schiller together. Each of us reads one person and so it’s quite a good training for reading and expressions. Deidi is all right. Her husband plays tennis and she is watching him, and they are going to the casino in Cannes or anything of that sort. Now I really don’t know what to tell next, nothing is happening here. Ref: 23.01.1938 Rear Admiral Antonio Azarola y Gresillón Antonio Azarola y Gresillón (1874 – 4th August 1936) was a Spanish Navy officer, rear admiral of the Spanish Republican Navy. He was executed by firing squad on 4th August 1936 at the Ferrol Naval Base in Galicia, NW Spain, by rebel Navy officers for refusing to join the coup of July 1936 against the Spanish Republic that triggered the Spanish Civil War. Azarola was executed by firing squad at 6 am on 4th August against the inner wall of the Cuartel de Dolores barracks. His body was later buried at the Vilagarcía de Arousa graveyard.
