Picture postcard showing men resting on the upper sun terrace of the NSKOV Erholungsheim “Frontkämpferdank” at Zakopane in the General Government. The establishment had been opened in May 1940 as a rest and convalescent home for Wehrmacht personnel, particularly wounded and seriously disabled servicemen. Contemporary German reports record that thousands of servicemen and veterans subsequently recuperated there.

The card was written at Zakopane on 12th May 1942 and appears to have been posted locally the following day. It is franked with a 12 Groschen General Government stamp and addressed to an Obergefreiter.

The photograph is especially significant because it provides a contemporary view of the men themselves relaxing on the convalescent home's upper terrace, against the Tatra Mountains. Ref: 13.05.1942 - 36/33
