Swedish cover posted on 10th May 1941, franked with the 15 öre issue commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Gustav Vasa Bible and bearing a non-postal “PÅ POST FÖR SVERIGE” label depicting three helmeted Swedish soldiers. The label was associated with Sweden's Hemvärnet (Home Guard) and the country's wartime preparedness campaign. The date is particularly evocative: Sweden was maintaining extensive military preparedness while surrounded by a rapidly changing European war; Finland had begun mobilisation on 9th May 1941, only the previous day. On the very day this cover was posted, the Swedish Riksdag was dealing with matters including donations to air defence, civil defence and the Home Guard. Elsewhere in Europe, 10th May 1941 was also the day Rudolf Hess made his extraordinary flight from Germany to Scotland. The cover therefore provides a particularly well-dated example of civilian Swedish mail carrying a visible reminder of the country's military preparedness during the Second World War.
