'Corrientes'

Dampfschiff 'Corrientes', Las Palmas, Canary Islands. This air mail cover was sent from Las Palmas to Arend Mühle in Bremen, Germany. Sender: Werner Gottschalk, who gives his position as First Officer of the steamer 'Corrientes', presently at Las Palmas. The cover bears Spanish postage and a Las Palmas military censorship marking, with later German censorship. Earlier in March 1941, 'Corrientes' was used clandestinely to resupply German U-boats at Puerto de La Luz, as confirmed by U-boat war diaries. This cover therefore provides direct contemporary evidence placing Werner Gottschalk aboard 'Corrientes' at Las Palmas on the 27th of March 1941, only weeks after those clandestine naval supply operations.
