Mi.450. Released as part of the inauguration of the transatlantic airmail service. The stamp was designed by Alvin R. Meissner with a few minor changes by the post office. First day sales totaled 166,671 stamps, with 63,634 covers cancelled. The 30-cent stamp was issued for use in franking mail to be flown on regular airmail service across the Atlantic Ocean and paid for up to a half ounce to any point in Europe. The principal feature of this stamp design is the insignia worn by air mail pilots: a globe with extended wings on either side and with a background of rays of light. Upon the globe are the words, 'U.S. air mail.'
