Saaz: Turnfest

SOURCE IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Cover sent from Austria to Switzerland featuring an unusually designed commemorative vignette (measuring 72 x 50 mm) produced for the Third Verbandsturnfest, held at Saaz (now Žatec, Czech Republic) from 13 to 16 July 1933, organised by the German gymnastics movement in Czechoslovakia.

The vignette features a striking three-dimensional interpretation of the traditional Turnerkreuz, formed from four interlocking letters F, representing the motto Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei (Fresh, Pious, Cheerful, Free). Its angular arrangement closely resembles the Nazi swastika, reflecting the increasingly nationalist political atmosphere of 1933.

The festival was closely associated with Konrad Henlein, leader of the German gymnastics association (Deutscher Turnverband) in Czechoslovakia. The gathering, attended by thousands of gymnasts and spectators, helped establish Henlein as a prominent spokesman for the Sudeten German nationalist movement.

On 01.10.1933, Henlein founded the Sudetendeutsche Heimatfront (Sudeten German Home Front), subsequently renamed the Sudetendeutsche Partei in 1935. The party became a major force in Czechoslovak politics and later played a central role in the Sudeten crisis of 1938.

The vignette is a particularly revealing example of the relationship between traditional German gymnastics symbolism, ethnic nationalism and the emerging political movement led by Henlein. Its design suggests an intentional visual resemblance to the swastika, although the precise intentions of the artist have not been established. Ref: 02.01.1933 - 14/54
