Reverse of a cover sent on 24th April 1946. Featuring a Deutsches Reich 40 Mark Workers issue, Michel Mi. 244a, with private “Sammlerverein GERMANIA Coblenz.” overprint. The black overprint was applied privately by the Notgeld-Sammlerverein Germania of Coblenz, a collectors' society established by at least October 1920 and reportedly numbering more than 380 members. The society specialised particularly in Notgeld and operated an extensive system of circulating exchange packets amongst its members. The overprint is not an official German postal issue but belongs to the group of private advertising and society overprints found on inflation-period stamps. The Germania overprint is specifically recorded by INFLA-Berlin on Mi. 209a, 244a, 314 and 317. Its precise function is not completely established, although surviving material indicates that these stamps were probably produced as publicity for the society and may also have been attached to its correspondence or circulating exchange packets.
